His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama makes Historic Visit Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, Leh
The Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC), Leh, was blessed with an extraordinarily auspicious and historic visit of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to the Devachan Campus today. His Holiness’s sacred presence brought immense joy, spiritual inspiration, and blessings to thousands of devotees, monks, nuns, students, staff, volunteers, and well-wishers who gathered to receive him.
The visit was particularly significant as His Holiness returned to the Mahabodhi campus more than three decades after his first historic visit in 1994, when he had inaugurated the Devachan Campus and blessed the vision of Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre.
The historic occasion commenced with a warm and reverential welcome to His Holiness by Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena, along with monks, nuns, students, staff, and members of the Mahabodhi family.
As a mark of deep reverence and gratitude, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena offered traditional offerings to His Holiness, seeking his continued blessings and guidance for the humanitarian, educational, spiritual, environmental, and peace initiatives of MIMC.
Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena then addressed the gathering, expressing profound gratitude for His Holiness’s return to the campus after more than three decades. Recalling His Holiness’s first visit in 1994, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena reflected on how the campus had grown from a simple dream into a vibrant centre of education, healthcare, meditation, humanitarian service, environmental care, and interfaith harmony.
He expressed his gratitude for His Holiness’s lifelong teachings on compassion, wisdom, non-violence, universal responsibility, and the understanding that all human beings belong to one human family. He also shared MIMC’s future aspirations, including the proposed Mahakaruna University, dedicated to the study and propagation of universal compassion, as well as the ambitious 1,000 Buddhas (Stongsku) project, dedicated to World Peace and the creation of a Global Family.
The programme also featured a deeply moving song offering by the students of Mahabodhi Residential School, presented as a heartfelt expression of gratitude and devotion to His Holiness. The young students of the school also offered an introduction to Mahabodhi, sharing with His Holiness the institution’s journey, its educational philosophy, and its commitment to holistic education, compassion, service, and the development of responsible and compassionate human beings.
A major highlight of the historic visit was the laying of the foundation stone by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for the MIMC Home for the Differently Abled at the Mahabodhi campus. His Holiness also blessed a sapling, symbolising the aspirations of MIMC for environmental protection, sustainability, peace, and the flourishing of compassion for generations to come.
The sacred occasion became even more special when a gentle rainfall blessed the gathering. The slight rain, arriving during the programme, added a profound sense of freshness, serenity, and auspiciousness to the occasion. For those gathered, the gentle showers were received as a beautiful blessing from nature, making an already sacred occasion even more memorable.
Another deeply significant moment came when His Holiness visited the MIMC Buddha Park for World Peace and circumambulated the 1,000 Buddha statues installed there. The sight of His Holiness walking amidst the statues, dedicated to peace and universal compassion, created a deeply moving and spiritually powerful moment for everyone present.
The 1,000 Buddhas project represents MIMC’s aspiration to contribute to world peace and to promote His Holiness’s enduring message that humanity must recognise itself as one human family. The project seeks to inspire people of all backgrounds to cultivate compassion, loving-kindness, wisdom, and responsibility towards one another and towards all sentient beings.
The visit also reaffirmed the growing role of the Devachan Campus as a centre for international dialogue, education, meditation, humanitarian service, environmental responsibility, and peace-building. Thousands of people from different parts of India and across the world participate in programmes organised at the campus, making it an increasingly important meeting place for people and cultures united by the aspiration for a more peaceful and compassionate world.
Bhikkhu Sanghasena also expressed deep gratitude to His Holiness for his gracious message for the forthcoming International Black-Necked Crane Festival, an initiative being undertaken in collaboration with the UT Administration and international organisations to promote greater awareness, compassion, and responsibility towards the conservation and protection of the Black-Necked Crane and its fragile Himalayan habitat.
Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena also informed about the preparations to host the International Conference on AI, Spirituality, Education and Compassion next month. The conference will explore how humanity can ensure that rapid technological advancement, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence, remains guided by wisdom, ethics, human values, and compassion. MIMC hopes that, with His Holiness’s blessings and inspiration, the conference will contribute meaningfully to discussions on the future of humanity and the responsible use of technology.
Speaking on the occasion, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena expressed his profound gratitude to His Holiness for returning to the campus that he had blessed in 1994.
“Whatever Mahabodhi has been able to accomplish over the past three decades is the result of the blessings of great spiritual masters, the generosity of countless well-wishers, and the selfless dedication of our volunteers, staff, supporters, and the entire Mahabodhi family,” he said.
He further expressed the hope that the renewed blessings of His Holiness would inspire Mahabodhi to continue expanding its efforts in the fields of education, healthcare, meditation, humanitarian service, environmental protection, world peace, and universal compassion.
The historic visit concluded on a deeply auspicious and emotional note, leaving the entire Mahabodhi family with a renewed sense of responsibility and inspiration to carry forward the vision of compassion and service.
For Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, His Holiness’s visit was not merely a ceremonial occasion. It was a powerful reaffirmation of the institution’s journey and its future direction: from Meditation in Action to Compassion in Action, from individual transformation to service of humanity, and ultimately towards the creation of a peaceful and compassionate Global Family.
The entire Mahabodhi family expressed its heartfelt gratitude to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his precious time, compassion, blessings, and guidance.
As the sacred gathering came to a close, the gentle rain had subsided, but the blessings and inspiration of the day remained deeply alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to witness this historic occasion.
