The Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Hospital is one of the most compassionate and life-changing projects established by the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC) under the visionary leadership of Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena. Founded in 1992, it holds the distinction of being Ladakh's first non-governmental hospital, created with the noble purpose of providing free or affordable healthcare to the poor, sick, and underprivileged sections of society. True to its name, “Karuna” meaning compassion, the hospital stands as a symbol of healing through kindness and service.
Located within the peaceful Mahabodhi Devachan Campus in Choglamsar, the hospital began as a modest initiative and has now evolved into a well-equipped 50-bed medical facility providing essential healthcare services to people from remote and rural regions of Ladakh. It offers medical consultations, surgical care, dental treatment, laboratory services, and health awareness programs—all aimed at improving the overall well-being of the community.
The hospital's dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and volunteers embody the Mahabodhi spirit of “Compassion in Action”, treating each patient with empathy and dignity. Special health camps and mobile medical units regularly reach out to distant villages, ensuring that even those living in the most inaccessible areas receive proper medical attention. The hospital also focuses on preventive healthcare and health education, promoting awareness about hygiene, nutrition, and mental wellness.
The Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Hospital is more than a medical institution—it is a sanctuary of hope and humanity. Through its continuous service and unconditional compassion, it has brought healing and comfort to thousands across Ladakh. It remains a living testament to MIMC's enduring mission of combining spiritual values with social action, ensuring that the light of compassion touches every life in need.
