The Mahabodhi Women Literacy Project is a heartfelt initiative of the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC) that embodies the true spirit of “Compassion in Action.” Launched in 1998 in the village of Stakmo with 33 learners, the project was inaugurated by Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena under the guidance of Madam Tsewang Dolma Tsarpa, Madam Tsewang Dolma, and Madam Kunzes Dolma. Its mission was clear—to empower women who had missed out on formal education in their youth by offering them the gift of literacy and self-reliance.
The early success of the Stakmo centre inspired the establishment of more literacy centres across Ladakh, including in Gonpa and Saboo. Over time, additional centres opened in Nurla, Sakti, Stok, Katpa, and Diskthtsal, all of which successfully completed their teaching goals and helped many women learn to read, write, and calculate basic mathematics. These achievements marked a turning point in the lives of many Ladakhi women, giving them the confidence and skills to better manage their families, finances, and participation in community life.
Today, the Women Literacy Project continues to flourish across several active centres in villages such as Choglamsar, Palam, Tukla, Yangthang, Saspotse, Ney, Umla, Skalzangling, Sankar, Chubi, Motik Market, and Diskittsal. The project primarily serves elderly women who never had the chance to attend school and were unable to read or write even in their native Ladakhi language (Bodyik). With patience, respect, and dedication, MIMC volunteers teach these learners the basics of Bodyik literacy and essential arithmetic skills.
The Mahabodhi Women Literacy Project stands as a beacon of empowerment and compassion, transforming not only individual lives but also entire communities. By restoring dignity and confidence through education, it reinforces MIMC's commitment to creating an inclusive and enlightened society where every woman—regardless of age or background—can continue to learn, grow, and inspire others.
