His Excellency the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, graciously visited the Mahabodhi Maitri Geriatric Home at the Devachan Campus to mark the New Year with the elderly residents of the Home.

On arrival, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor was warmly received by Bhikkhu Sanghasena, at the MIMC Sambodhi Retreat Centre. The Lieutenant Governor expressed happiness at beginning the New Year with the Mahabodhi family and appreciated the serene and compassionate environment of the campus.

During the visit, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Bhikkhu Sanghasena held meaningful discussions on the wide range of humanitarian, social, and welfare initiatives being carried out by the Mahabodhi organization under the compassionate guidance of Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena. On the occasion, Bhikkhu Sanghasena presented a special edition of the Bhagavad Gita that he had preserved with him for many years.

The Lieutenant Governor also visited the MIMC Buddha Park for World Peace at the Devachan Campus, where he appreciated Bhikkhu Sanghasena’s vision of peace, compassion, and service to humanity. He assured all possible support from the UT Administration in realizing this significant project.

Thereafter, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor visited the Mahabodhi Maitri Geriatric Home, which currently provides shelter, care, nutritious food, and medical facilities to 40 elderly persons from different parts of Ladakh. Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena apprised him of the UT Administration’s proposal to jointly operate a 50-capacity old age home at Saboo, funded by the Ministry of Social Justice, and requested support for essential facilities such as heating and drinking water.

The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor spent quality time with the residents, celebrated the New Year with them, and interacted warmly with the senior citizens. He extended New Year greetings and appreciated the selfless service rendered by the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre in ensuring that senior citizens live with dignity, compassion, and care.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Kavinder Gupta said that senior citizens are the foundation of society, carrying wisdom, values, and life experiences that guide future generations. He reiterated the UT Administration’s commitment to the welfare, healthcare, social security, and respect of the elderly. He also appealed to the youth of Ladakh to spend time with senior citizens, learn from their experiences, and contribute towards building a compassionate and inclusive society.

On the occasion, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor distributed blankets and fruits among the inmates of the old age home and thanked the caretakers for their dedicated and selfless service.

Ms. Shashanka Ala, IAS, Administrative Secretary, briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the construction of the 50-capacity old age home at Saboo by the Social Welfare Department and proposed its joint operation with MIMC for enhanced effectiveness and quality care.

Also present during the visit were Ms. Kunzes Angmo, JKAS Director, Social Welfare Department, along with officials from the Department of Social Welfare and the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre.
